Sensipar®/Mimpara® (cinacalcet HCI)

Indicated for: Secondary hyperparathyroidism
Indicated for: Hypercalcemia in parathyroid cancer
Status: In market (Worldwide Ex-Asia)
Rights: Amgen

In 1996, NPS licensed worldwide rights (with the exception of the previously licensed Asian territories) to Amgen to develop and commercialize cinacalcet HCl for the treatment of hyperparathyroidism.

In March 2004, Amgen received FDA approval for cinacalcet HCl for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in chronic kidney disease patients on dialysis, often referred to as "Stage V" chronic kidney disease patients, and for the treatment of hypercalcemia, or excess serum calcium levels, in patients with parathyroid carcinoma. Secondary hyperparathyroidism most commonly results from chronic renal disease, which can develop in hemodialysis patients. Amgen markets cinacalcet HCl as Sensipar® in the US and as Mimpara® in the EU.

NPS has partially monetized its royalty revenue and milestone payments from Amgen through the issuance of non-recourse debt that is both serviced and secured by its revenue related to Sensipar® and Mimpara®. After repayment of the secured debt, the remaining cash flows from these royalties will return to NPS.
